The Spokane area is filled with beauty year round but fall is one of my top 4 favorite seasons for senior pictures. Did you catch that?! Yep, I like all seasons. However, September and early October are prime time for fall. Early to mid fall will has the perfect combo of great weather where it is not too hot or too cold and great color. Here are my top 4 reasons for your fall senior session in Spokane!
If you don’t like being in the scorching heat of July and August or the bone shattering cold of December through February then early to mid fall is the right time for you. In the Spokane area, daytime temperatures stay in that 55°-75° range. With that perfect fall weather, your outfit options wont be in short supply. You can still wear sundresses, shorts, skirts and a cute top but also bring out your warm sweater, jeans and boot outfits. Fall is perfect for showcasing your best looks!
Who needs Boston in the fall when you have Spokane in the fall?! Leaves and mountain larch trees turn their shades of green to those glowing reds, yellows, greens, and browns. When fall color will arrive and how long the color will last is widely variable from year to year. Typically the leaves start turning in late September with full fall glory in early to mid October. Fall color can last well into November but can also disappear in a flash with a hard freeze that may arrive before the end of October. If fall leaf color is your primary goal, aim for the first 3 weeks of October. Of course fall’s beauty is more than just the leaf change. Fall also has beautiful grasses and plant textures for those dreamy looks and awesome evening light that stretches out for hours.
Golden hour is my favorite time of every day for photos but as we get closer to December 21st, the sun stays lower in the sky and the magic of golden hour becomes golden hours. That soft glow of low sun matched with fall color is absolutely incredible, making every shot amazing.
Adding layers to your outfits is a great way to heighten your look in any photo shoot. In the fall, playing with layered outfits is super fun and easy. You can still wear short dresses, skirts and summery tops but you can also bring out those warm colored outfits with lots of texture. Boots, scarves, jackets, sweaters or long flowy dresses are all great opportunities for fall weather sessions.
When I think of brown I go right to Crayola brown but browns are actually a wide range of shades that are perfect for fall colored outfits. You can go from rich deep chocolate browns and leather to those wonderful lighter shades of brown like cream, sand or hazelnut. Browns with a bit more orange also look spectacular in fall photos.
Downtown Spokane has a nice blend of fall foliage, streets and rooftops that look great in fall photos. Even without fall colors directly in the photos, the low golden sunlight and a well thought out fall outfit pair well. In downtown Spokane I love taking photos that include streets, bridges, rooftop garages and the Spokane river. Style your outfits with layers, try something trendy, something classic and something causal for your fall photos.
Whether you are going for a natural or urban look, fall is a beautiful season for senior portraits.
