Students are graduating into an increasingly competitive job market where first impressions often happen online. Before a hiring manager meets a student, they may have already seen their LinkedIn profile, resume photo, or portfolio website. That’s why College Headshots have become an important part of preparing students for their post graduation careers.
Professional College Portrait Photography does more than create a nice photo. It helps students present themselves professionally for their future careers.
Nate Robinson Photography offers professional services to students in partnership with college departments and clubs at Washington State University, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Whitworth University, and local community colleges. This service prepares students for the next chapter of their lives.
This guide covers why College Headshots matter, how my sessions work, and how students and university departments can benefit from offering this professional service.
Many students wait until after graduation to think about professional photos. However, the best time to take College Headshots is while they are still on campus and actively preparing for internships, networking events, and job applications.
Some college departments have already considered the value of a headshot, provided a backdrop for students to take their own photo and called this good enough. But you know better. When trying to get into a professional career, hiring a professional headshot photographer will produce images worth the degree you have worked so hard to earn.
Today’s employers routinely look up applicants online. Platforms like LinkedIn, department directories, and graduate school applications often display profile photos.
A professional headshot instantly communicates:
A casual selfie, school provided backdrop or a friend with a camera rarely creates the same impression. A clean, professional headshot helps students appear prepared for their workplace before even walking into an interview.
Students applying to graduate programs or competitive industries often benefit the most from professional headshots.
Fields where headshots are commonly used include:
Students at universities often use professional portraits for internships, alumni networking, and career fairs.
College is often the first time students begin developing a professional identity.
Professional College Headshots can be used for:
Instead of waiting until graduation, students who take professional photos earlier can also use their photo throughout their final year of school.
If your school doesn’t offer professional headshot services, I encourage you to reach out to me and your department to set up a portrait event.
Before considering locations for headshots, think about where your students will likely be applying for jobs. Would a simple gray backdrop with full professional lighting be the most beneficial or incorporating part of the school or campus produce the best results? If you are considering an outdoor location, talk to me about a backup plan as weather is a huge factor to consider in photo locations. I am quite flexible so if we need to change gears, I can make it happen.

A simple, one color studio backdrop eliminates all potential distractions to focus solely on the student. This focus provides the most versatile headshot for a variety of careers and uses. As such, these are the photos most requested by colleges and universities. Headshots done with a backdrop can easily fit into a variety of spaces in your department to avoid disruption, messy backgrounds and weather related concerns. However, outdoor photos do bring another level of life to headshot photos.

When appropriate, architecture, plants or iconic school locations add a layer of life to headshot photos to provide context to the students goals or the general feel of their anticipated careers. Keep in mind that all outdoor photos must be done in a way to minimize distractions and focus on the student as the primary subject.

Iconic Locations:

Indoor and outdoor locations provide context and life to headshots that may be applicable or even enhance their career opportunities.
While university departments often book portrait sessions for their students, student organizations also benefit from professional photography.
Clubs, student government, Greek community or student led entertainment groups frequently need updated headshots and marketing images. I am happy to help fulfill those needs with a mobile professional studio.
Student organizations benefit from professional portraits.
Groups often schedule photography for:
Having consistent photography across an entire group improves visual branding and professionalism. These photos are often used on organizational websites and in promotional materials.
Students sometimes feel nervous about professional photography, especially if they have never had a portrait taken before.
Fortunately, College Portrait Photography sessions with Nate Robinson Photography are fast, relaxed, and fully guided.
College headshot sessions can be done in three ways to best fit your group size and goals. Each student will get 1 or 2 poses and have a chance to review those photos. Students will either let me choose the best or tell me which photo they prefer. This all happens in a one to four minute period.
Headshot sessions are easy and flexible for groups of up to 30 students. These sessions can be completed in under 1 hour.
For departments with more than 30 students, it is good to offer students reservable time slots. This allows students to know when their photos will be taken and only show up at their time. This saves them time and reduces a waiting line disruption to your day. I can photograph up to 80 students in a half day or 160 students in a full day.
An hourly, first come, first serve style works best for events where students come and go. No photo reservations are necessary and service can be provided with a firm set time or flexible to continue until the host calls the service complete. Some events include: career fairs, department open houses, special events like department graduation parties, student entertainment or student government led activities.
After the session, images are professionally edited to ensure the best quality.
Editing typically includes:
Students and Hosts then receive high-resolution digital images through an online gallery for download and use.
Choosing the right outfit can significantly improve the final look of your College Headshots.
The goal is to keep clothing timeless, clean, and professional. Consider your career and what a ‘best’ look would be for that job.
For career headshots, consider wearing:
Avoid overly bright colors or large logos that may distract from your face.
Have you already signed up for your headshots? Preparing for a photography session doesn’t have to be complicated.
These simple tips can help students get the most out of their portrait experience.
Do you have a preferred ‘side’? Let your photographer know. Offering photos that make you look and feel best is a priority.
Think about your anticipated career and wear something that reflects that goal. Are most people in that career displayed online in suits, a button down or something less formal? You can bring in your personal flavor with color and outfit design even while following the guide of a careers dress code.
Bringing a friend is great for any last hair or makeup checks and for capturing real smiles. Give yourself a few extra minutes to arrive and be comfortable.
Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience. Professional portraits through Nate Robinson Photography will be fast, easy and stress free.
Colleges across eastern Washington regularly schedule College Headshots to prepare students for their careers. If your school has not offered a service like this to you, please reach out to me and your departments leadership about scheduling a headshot event.

Students or colleges who want to maximize the value of their degree are encouraged to hire a professional.
Many people assume graduation photos only include cap-and-gown portraits. While those images are important, your grad photo session often includes several types of photos that capture both your academic achievements and professional identity.
Grad portraits help commemorate years of hard work, late nights studying, and the friendships built along the way.
Graduation portraits through Nate Robinson Photography capture the perfect mix of celebration, achievement, professionalism and memories. Photos start with your professional headshot and move to an assortment of regalia combinations to express the joy of your achievement before ending with a traditional full regalia look. Photos are taken solo or with friends and family at the campus landmarks that meant most to you.
Students graduating from Gonzaga university, Eastern Washington University and Washington State University often choose iconic campus locations to reflect their personal college experience.
Most graduation sessions begin with professional headshots before putting on graduation regalia.
This approach allows students to walk away with their first or a fresh new professional career headshots.
Taking headshots first ensures students have polished photos ready for job applications, internships, or graduate school before hair gets messed up in the celebrations of their particularly joyous graduation photo session.
